History Curriculum Intention:
Our History Curriculum will:
- Inspire a love and passion for History.
- Embed the concept of chronology with our children, to understand how periods of history interlink and connect across the world.
- Provide children with knowledge, skills and strategies to understand the past and how this influences the present.
- Connect key historical concepts so that, as children continue to study, they develop a deeper understanding of local, national and world History.
- Develop a curiosity, fascination and respect about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
- For children to know more and remember more in each area of history studied, there is a structure to the lesson sequence whereby prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of facts and historical understanding are built into lessons.
- Revision and introduction of key vocabulary are built into each lesson. This vocabulary is then used and modelled with high expectations. This is done through the key concepts of historical enquiry.
- Children are provided with a learning environment that encourages their curiosity, fascination and respect for the world and its people.
- Teachers follow clear guidance on the progression of learning. This is evident through the triangulation of medium term plans, knowledge organisers and end of unit assessments which allow both children and teachers to be clear about what is to be learnt
- Our key concept-based approach allows children to make connections to important themes between topics studied. This provides them with the skills to explore the ‘bigger picture’
The impact of South View’s curriculum design will see curious and interested historians who want to continue to build on their knowledge now and in the future. Children will enthusiastically make connections to previous learning. Meanwhile, they will develop a respect for the past and its impact on our present. Children will be expected to leave South View with excellent progress made in the subject relative to the individual’s starting point; they will benefit from a wealth of retained knowledge.
