Our EYFS Curriculum
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at South View Community Primary our aims are to:
- Support children to make a planned, confident transition from home to school.
- Provide a happy, caring, safe and secure environment for learning.
- Plan learning experiences that meet the individual needs and interests of the children through a balanced provision of adult-led and child-initiated opportunities.
- Support children to become competent and confident learners, so they are able to reach their full potential.
- Provide a broad and balanced high-quality curriculum in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance.
- Foster positive home-school links with parents and other care providers.
We follow The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and use development matters to assess and adapt planning to ensure children are reaching their potential and developing within their age bands. This framework is a means of ensuring high standards of early education and care. It underpins all future learning by supporting and fostering the children’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing. It encourages positive attitudes and dispositions towards learning and promotes learning through play.
All children in the EYFS at our school are encouraged to enjoy and share books with each other, individually and with an adult. A meeting is held in school for parents at the beginning of the Autumn Term to explain in detail about reading/phonics and mathematics in the EYFS and school life in general. We use Read, Write, Inc which is a synthetic phonics approach to learning to read and write, and more information is given about this at our Curriculum evening in September.

What are the EYFS assessment levels?
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Profile is a report of your child’s development and achievement at the end of the Foundation year. There are three main objectives: to inform parents about their children’s development, to ease the transition to Key Stage 1, help year 1 teachers plan an effective, responsive and appropriate curriculum that will meet the needs of all children
The EYFS Profile is broken down into seven areas of learning:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Within each of these areas, there are specific Early Learning Goals – for example, in the case of Communication and language, these are Listening, Attention and Understanding, and Speaking. Your child will be given an achievement level for each area of learning.
How are children assessed in Foundation?
Assessment is ongoing throughout the EYFS, but the official EYFS Profile for each child is completed in the final term of the Foundation year. Assessment in Foundation Stage is carried out in line with the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Framework’ and staff observe the children to create a ‘learning log’ which evidences the child’s progress through the Foundation Stage. Using Tapestry to record this learning log parents are able to see weekly their child’s observations.
Each child’s level of development is assessed against the early learning goals. Teachers indicate whether children are meeting expected levels of development, or if they are not yet reaching expected levels (‘emerging’). This is the EYFS Profile.
