Physical Education

" Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity"

John F Kennedy

Intent

South View Community Primary School values the importance of Physical Education (PE) and believes that when experienced in a safe and supportive environment ensures optimum physical and emotional development.

South View aims to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities. We do this through our scheme GetSet4PE which fully adheres to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills such as tolerance, fairness and respect. We want to teach children skills to keep safe such as being able to swim.

Through enrichment activities and intra-school competitions, we aim to raise the profile of PE and expose our children to sports they may never have had the opportunity to engage with. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at South View, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Additionally, an imperative element of the curriculum at South View shows a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere.

Implementation

The PE curriculum is taught through the use of the GetSet4PE scheme, which is in-line with the National Curriculum, and is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group.

  • PE sessions provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time sports activities are available each day and children can attend after school sport clubs
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Each year a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time sports activities, inter-house competitions, our annual Sports day and any other Sporting activities.
  • Year 6 children swim from after Easter but all children from other year groups swim once a week for 6/7 weeks during the Summer Term 2.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
